A Puerto Rican man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a charge of damaging or disabling an aircraft as his flight was departing from Boston to Puerto Rico.

Angel Luis Morales Torres, 24, was first indicted in March 2025 following an incident in January that year.

On January 7, he was a passenger on a JetBlue flight set to travel from Boston to Puerto Rico.

As the aircraft was on the taxiway preparing for takeoff, Morales Torres left his seat and ran down the aisle to an empty emergency exit row.

He began attempting to pry the door open. A flight attendant tried to restrain Morales Torres, and another passenger eventually tackled him.

Before the suspect was successfully restrained, he managed to get the emergency door open, which automatically deployed the inflatable emergency slide, rendering the aircraft inoperable.

Morales Torres faces a maximum of 20 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

He will be sentenced in March 2025.

The motive behind Morales Torres’ actions is not clear.

โ€œPuerto Rico has the highest share of U.S. household on welfare at 47%.โ€ My hope is that those who want to make the island independent succeed at it the sooner the better.
