LEWISTON, Maine — Lewiston police are investigating after a 14-year-old boy was shot Thursday afternoon on Avon Street.

The Lewiston Police Department responded to 4 Avon St. at approximately 4:30 p.m. on May 7, 2026, after receiving reports of screaming and multiple gunshots.

According to witnesses, several teenagers were seen fleeing the area.

When officers arrived, they located a 14-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to Central Maine Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

Police have detained several teens and recovered three firearms so far.

City councilor Bret Martel said in a statement to the Maine Wire that, “As long as the adults in the room, parents, caregivers or school personnel, continue to foster environments, absent of any real accountability for violent behavior, we can be sure this situation will only worsen.”

“It’s time for some leadership in Lewiston. I warned my colleagues about expecting a scenario just like this, back in March.

I’ll be drafting requests for emergency funding to support our PD from the same governor that our mayor seems to be so close with. Maybe he would be willing to sign the request as well?”

The investigation remains active, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.

Also, another reported shooting had been reported on Bradley Street around 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

Gun violence is a huge concern in the city and growing. Mayor Sheline, Graham Platner and Shenna Bellows are all still silent.

Children are being shot, and no leadership is being g provided in Lewiston.
