LEWISTON, Maine – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested a Lewiston man from Angola during a targeted operation on May 6, ICE Boston said in a statement to The Maine Wire.

ICE identified the man as Israel Gomes Pessoa-Amaral, whom the agency described as a criminal illegal alien from Angola.

According to ICE, Pessoa-Amaralโ€™s criminal history includes pending charges for failure to submit to arrest or detention and refusing to stop. He also has a prior arrest for failure to appear.

ICE said Pessoa-Amaral entered the United States illegally on Aug. 10, 2024, during what the agency described as the Biden border crisis. He was offered the opportunity to voluntarily depart the United States but refused, according to ICE.

Pessoa-Amaral will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

โ€œUnder President Trump and Secretary Mullin, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the United States,โ€ ICE said.

The Maine Wire will continue to follow this breaking story and provide updates as more details become available.
