Several WWII-era rockets were discovered in a Nantucket, Massachusetts, sand dune, prompting a bomb squad response.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services announced the incident on Thursday, though they did not specify when it actually took place.

The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad traveled to the island, a popular vacation spot, for reports of unexploded military ordnance that was found buried in an eroding sand dune.

The U.S. Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit and the Nantucket Fire Department responded to assist.

The agencies were able to identify the ordnance as “several” WWII-era rockets used in military training exercises.

They determined that the rockets still contained explosive material and posed a threat to the public.

Bomb technicians conducted a controlled detonation of the explosives and released the scene to local authorities.

It is not clear how many of the rockets were discovered.
