The Bath Fire Department is looking for information on the mysterious burning of a large American flag draped over the main entrance of the city’s Masonic Temple on Tuesday.

At approximately 10:13 a.m., the Bath Fire Rescue Department responded to reports of a fire at 958 Washington Street, the city’s Masonic Temple. The Fire Department added that the building has been an important part of the community for decades.

The fire department arrived to discover that a large American flag, approximately six feet by ten feet in dimensions, that had been draped over the building’s main entrance had burned.

The fire also caused minor damage to the building itself.

By the time crews arrived, the fire was out and the damage appeared minimal.

The fire department has not yet determined when the fire took place.

The Maine State Fire Marshal is joining the Bath Fire Rescue Department and the Bath Police Department in investigating the cause and the timeframe of the fire.

Investigators noted the presence of a smaller American flag secured to the porch railing with zip ties.

People associated with the building said that they were not familiar with the smaller flag and were unaware of how it got there.
