A 19-year-old driver with a suspended license allegedly struck and injured an 11-year-old boy in Portland on Monday as he was riding his bike across Brighton Avenue.
At approximately 8:49 p.m., the Portland Police Department responded to the intersection of St. John/Devonshire Streets and Brighton Ave following a report of a vehicle striking a cyclist.
Police arrived and conducted a preliminary investigation, which allegedly determined that an 11-year-old boy was crossing Brighton Ave on his bike when he was struck and sustained minor leg injuries. The boy was treated on scene.
Officers identified the driver as Beder Hussein, 19, of Portland.
Hussein reportedly had a green traffic light at the time of the crash, but witnesses reported that he was talking on a cell phone immediately preceding the crash.
Hussein allegedly confirmed to officers that he had been talking on the phone at the time of the crash.
Officers learned during the investigation that Hussein allegedly had a suspended driver’s license, though they did not specify why the license had been suspended previously.
Hussein was charged with operating after suspension and driving to endanger, though it is not clear whether he was arrested or simply issued a criminal summons.
He does not currently appear in Cumberland County Jail records.
