A Saco middle school teacher has smashed the world record for three-pointers, school officials said Monday night.
Ryan Martin, known by Saco Middle School as “Dr. Buckets,” broke the record by 412 baskets.
Martin sank 11,115 three-point throws in a 24-hour period, school spokeswoman and contributing writer Karen Garnett reported in the Biddeford Buzz.
He began throwing at 9:30 a.m. on May 31 and continued nonstop through the night and into Monday morning, June 1, 2026, in the Saco Middle School gymnasium.
“This challenge pushed me physically and mentally more than any record I’ve attempted before,” Martin told Garnett. “There were moments throughout the night when I had to rely on discipline, focus, and the support of everyone around me.
“Hearing my students cheer me on during that final hour gave me an incredible boost of energy,” he added. “Sharing this moment with them made it even more special.”
The apparent record has yet to be verified by Guinness officials.
“Martin has become known for taking on extraordinary basketball challenges while promoting perseverance, goal setting, and healthy lifestyles,” Garnett said. “His world-record accomplishments include Guinness World Records for Most Free Throws Made in One Hour, Most NBA Three-Pointers Made in One Hour, Most NBA Half-Court Shots Made in One Hour and now Most NBA Three-Pointers Made in a 24-Hour Period.”
Superintendent Jeremy Ray said Martin’s achievement serves as a powerful example for students.
“Ryan’s accomplishment is remarkable not only because of the record itself, but because of the lessons it teaches our students,” Ray said. “Success doesn’t happen overnight. It requires preparation, resilience, perseverance, and the willingness to keep going when things get difficult.”
The previous record was set by former College of Charleston and West Liberty University basketball standout Dalton Bolon, who three months ago sank 10,703 three-point shots in 24 hours.
