Emergency Blood Shortage Hits Maine as Most Donation Appointments Go Unfilled

Maine hospitals are facing an urgent need for blood donations after the American Red Cross declared a national emergency blood shortage and supplies fell nearly 25 percent in June.

AUGUSTA, Maine – In Maine, approximately 61 percent of upcoming blood donation appointments remain unfilled, even as trauma centers across the state confront increased demand during the busy summer months.

Type O blood — particularly O-negative and O-positive — and B-negative blood are critically needed, although donations from people with all blood types are welcome.

The shortage comes as MaineHealth and other regional hospitals report a seasonal increase in serious accidents involving motor vehicles, all-terrain vehicles and water sports. Those emergencies can require hospitals to use blood immediately to treat trauma patients.

Mainers can schedule an appointment through the American Red Cross or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

Those who donate blood by the end of the month will receive a $15 Fandango movie ticket.

Readers can find a nearby blood drive and schedule an appointment through the American Red Cross.
