AUGUSTA, Maine — The latest campaign finance filings in Maine’s gubernatorial race are drawing renewed attention to the differing fundraising strategies employed by the state’s two major-party nominees.
According to the Maine Republican Party, the 42-day post-primary campaign finance reports show Democratic nominee Hannah Pingree relying heavily on out-of-state financial support, while Republican nominee Bobby Charles is drawing a larger share of contributions from small-dollar donors within Maine.
The Maine GOP said Pingree’s latest filing includes 66 out-of-state donors who contributed the maximum amount allowed under Maine law, arguing that her campaign is increasingly dependent on support from outside the state.
Republicans also pointed to Pingree’s primary election performance, noting that she secured the Democratic nomination despite receiving support from less than one-quarter of Democratic primary voters in a multi-candidate race. The party argues that her campaign has since turned to national fundraising networks and established political donors to build its financial advantage heading into the general election.
The report also highlights fundraising by independent gubernatorial candidate Rick Bennett. According to the Maine GOP’s analysis, Bennett received contributions from at least eight registered lobbyists in the latest reporting period.
By comparison, Republicans say Charles’ campaign is being fueled primarily by small-dollar donations from Maine residents.

The Maine Republican Party argues those figures reflect a campaign supported by working-class Mainers rather than large donors and political insiders.
“Bobby Charles is running a campaign that is funded by hard-working Mainers, not wealthy donors from outside our state nor well-connected special interest lobbyists in Augusta like Hannah Pingree,” said Maine GOP Communications Director Kristina Parker. “Mainers face a stark choice for Governor: We can choose reform, competency and leadership in Bobby Charles, or nepotism, failure and more of the same from Hannah Pingree.”
Campaign finance reports are filed periodically throughout the election cycle and provide a snapshot of donor activity, contribution amounts, and campaign fundraising during each reporting period. Additional filings are expected before the November general election, offering further insight into how each campaign is financing its bid for the Blaine House.
