The Maine State Police arrested a Norridgewock man on Saturday after he allegedly brake-checked a Maine Game Warden in a stolen vehicle, fled while driving the wrong way, and caused a brief standoff.

At approximately 9:19 p.m., a Maine Game Warden was responding to a search and rescue with his sirens and lights active and traveling northbound on I-95 near mile marker 186 in Bangor.

While responding, the Warden encountered a Chevrolet pickup truck operating erratically in the passing lane. The truck was later reported stolen from Skowhegan.

The driver of the truck allegedly brake-checked the warden despite his emergency lights and sirens.

The warden then notified State Police and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver reportedly fled.

Near mile marker 191 in Orono, the truck driver allegedly used an emergency access crossover, then accelerated southbound until crossing again near Hogan Road in Bangor, where he allegedly continued traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

In response to the immediate danger posed by a speeding driver traveling the wrong way, a Maine State Police sergeant rammed the truck and forced it off the road into a ditch.

Another state trooper and a warden then boxed the vehicle in to prevent the driver from fleeing.

Following a brief standoff, the driver, Lawrence Knowles, 60, of Norridgewock, was arrested and transported to the Penobscot County Jail.

He faces charges of eluding an officer, OUI drugs, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, aggravated operating after habitual offender revocation, violation of conditions of release, and refusing to submit to arrest.

Knowles sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital prior to being booked into jail.

No officers were harmed during the incident.
