EDINBURGH, Maine – A 61-year-old Howland man was killed Saturday evening after losing control of his vehicle on Interstate 95 in Edinburg, according to the Maine State Police.

Troopers were called to the scene at approximately 7:50 p.m. on July 18 following reports of a single-vehicle crash in the median near mile marker 210.

When first responders arrived, they found the driver, identified as Bruce Ireland, 61, of Howland, deceased inside a 2012 Honda Accord.

The crash remains under investigation, but preliminary findings indicate Ireland was traveling northbound on wet pavement at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle. The Honda left the roadway and entered the wooded median.

Investigators also said Ireland was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Traffic on Interstate 95 was reduced to a single lane for approximately three hours while troopers and emergency crews investigated the scene and cleared the wreckage.

The Howland Fire Department and Robinson’s Towing assisted the Maine State Police during the response.

State police are reminding motorists to slow down and use extra caution when driving in adverse weather conditions, particularly during periods of heavy rain. Officials also urged drivers to allow additional travel time and to always wear a seatbelt.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
