A new bridge on Route 11 near Millinocket now bears a special plaque naming it the Detective Benjamin Campbell Memorial Bridge.
Col. William Ross of Maine State Police and U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, spoke about Det. Campbell’s bravery and service as a state trooper.
Northern Timber Cruisers spearheaded the project “honoring one of our state’s greatest,” State Police said on their Facebook page.
Campbell was killed April 3, 2019, when a wheel from a passing logging truck flew off and hit him while he was helping a stranded motorist on Interstate 95 in Hampden.
The 31-year-old trooper was just days from his birthday, on his way to Augusta when he stopped just south of the Coldbrook Road overpass to help someone stranded in a snowstorm.
The logging truck was approaching Campbell’s cruiser and moved into the left lane to give him some space.
While the rig was switching lanes, two wheels came off the truck, one of them striking and instantly killing the young trooper.
Campbell’s name was added to the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Augusta five years ago.
He lived in Millinocket and left behind his wife, Hillary, and 6-month-old son, Everett.
Campbell joined Maine State Police in 2012 as a trooper.
He was promoted to detective five years later and was a member of the polygraph unit.
