A 27-year-old Presque Isle man has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Bangor to multiple federal offenses involving the attempted sexual exploitation of minors.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine, Joseph Maile pleaded guilty to attempted sex trafficking of a minor, enticement of a minor, and attempted enticement of a minor.
Court records state that in 2024, Maile used the social media platform Snap to proposition minors for sexual images and offered money in exchange for sex with minors.
Maile faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum sentence of 25 years. He also faces a fine of up to $250,000 and up to a lifetime term of supervised release.
Sentencing will take place following the completion of a presentence investigation by the U.S. Probation Office. A federal district court judge will determine the final sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Federal prosecutors said the case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat the sexual exploitation and abuse of children. The program coordinates federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts to identify victims and prosecute individuals who exploit children through the internet.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office also encouraged the public to report incidents involving child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children through its CyberTipline or by calling 1-800-843-5678. In Maine, individuals affected by sexual assault or abuse can also access the state’s confidential 24-hour sexual assault helpline at 1-800-871-7741.
