An innovative space for emerging creatives could be coming to Sanford, thanks to efforts by local artist Meagan Boulter. Boulter is currently raising money to fund start-up costs for a project she is calling the Gray Room, a weekend-only art gallery where local artists can display their work without paying exhibition fees or commissions.

“I’ve taught art workshops, run creative programs, and watched people light up when they finally feel seen. I’ve seen older adults rediscover confidence. I’ve seen beginners create something they never thought they could. I’ve seen how art brings people together in a way nothing else does,” Boulter writes on her fundraising website.

Boulter is a Sanford native who creates commissioned portraits, including portraits honoring loved ones who have passed away by incorporating their ashes into the artwork. She has also taught art workshops and organized creative programs.

It’s that experience, witnessing the number of talented artists in the area, that inspired her to pursue the Gray Room. Her goal is to create a space where artists and community members can connect through creativity, and where they have the opportunity to display their work without paying fees.

The Gray Room would offer free exhibition space for local artists, community art nights, creative workshops, senior-friendly programs, pop-up events and maker showcases. It would also serve as a community gathering space centered around creativity.

Via a community fundraising effort, Boulter is hoping to cover operational costs, insurance, staging for the art space and community programming. She has currently raised over $5,000, with a goal set at $10,000.

The fundraiser is participating in a challenge grant opportunity where the project with the highest number of individual patrons will have its dollars doubled.
