An estimated 627 non-citizen MaineCare recipients are set to lose their taxpayer-funded healthcare on October 1 following changes made by President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill budget, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced on Wednesday.
The DHHS Office of MaineCare Services issued its notice warning that, on October 1, some non-citizens, including refugees and asylees without lawful permanent resident status—categories that could include asylum seekers who entered the country illegally—will lose their MaineCare coverage.
The coverage loss comes from Medicaid cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill, which also included work requirements for Medicaid coverage.
The DHHS clarified that the changes would not affect coverage for anyone under the age of 21, or “pregnant people.”
The announcement revealed that, last week, the Maine Office of Family Independence (OFI) sent letters to 426 households and 627 individuals.
While the state expects those individuals to become ineligible for full MaineCare coverage, the DHHS clarified that they will remain eligible for Emergency Services MaineCare coverage.
The letter was translated into the six languages most commonly spoken among the “impacted population,” though the DHHS did not specify which languages those are.
Formal notices of coverage changes are anticipated to be mailed in September 2026.
The DHHS notice serves as an admission that the state is aware of at least 627 foreigners who do not have lawful resident status receiving healthcare benefits paid for by working Mainers’ taxes.

Maine leaders will scramble to come up with some way to keep them on benefits. Never mind the loose long Maine residents that can’t afford cmp plus groceries. All Maine leaders care about is the immigrants. It’s heart wrenching, for me anyways.
I do hope this goes through effectively, but I can’t trust Maine government, especially Mills.
These ppl should not be on Maine care to begin with, now go home…take Mills and Bellows with you.
What is so difficult for the Libs to understand ?
No Coverage for Non Citizens .
Sounds reasonable to me .
Hanna Pingree will invite the entire third world to Maine and try to give them health care .
You will pay for it . I will leave .
A small step, in the right direction,….
GOOD non citizens should never be allowed to feed at the public trough.
Democrats cater to non- citizens because it’s so easy for them to vote in The Peoples’ Republic of Maine.
How many of those 627 people are here illegally? Why have the ones here illegally not been deported?
Let me guess, one of the six languages most commonly spoken by the impacted population is Somali.
About time
Only 627?
GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As one who jumped through all the hoops to come here legally and eventually become a citizen I love the fact that they will be removed. I’m sure the idiots in the Democrap party will find a way to screw the taxpayers to buy more of the illegal vote
627 Well, that ought to keep the rioting to a manageable number.
However, just the threat of “losing” bene’s could set the backwoods robbinhoods into prepper mode.
Stand by for heavy rolls. This is knot a drill.
Hope everyone had a “nice” relaxing weekend. Get the snowshoes out.
They were always ineligible because they were never eligible.
The rules were not followed by the Democrats’ in the first place.
speaking as registered Independent voter.
“Hanna Pingree will invite the entire third world to Maine and try to give them health care”. I do not see them staying at Hanna’s Island Inn for free. But I have to pay for them to stay in Maine.
MaineCare is notorious for NOT reimbursing healthcare providers throughout the state, forcing rural hospitals and clinics (especially those in the 2nd Congressional District) to scale back or shut down completely.
so, is losing that ‘coverage’ a bad thing? Or a good thing?
