Trump Declares U.S.-Iran Ceasefire “Over” After Overnight Military Escalation

President Donald Trump declared Wednesday that the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran is effectively finished, following a dramatic overnight exchange of military strikes that has pushed the conflict back to the brink of full-scale war.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump said the temporary agreement had run its course, adding that dealing with Tehran had become “a waste of time.” While the president indicated diplomatic discussions could technically continue, his remarks signaled a sharp departure from the ceasefire framework established just weeks ago.

The latest escalation began early Wednesday when U.S. Central Command launched a series of strikes against Iranian military targets. According to U.S. officials, more than 80 targets were hit, including facilities and military assets in Bandar Abbas, Sirik, and on Qeshm Island near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The strikes came after Washington accused Iran of attacking three commercial vessels transiting the shipping lane, including oil tankers linked to Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Iran responded by claiming it targeted dozens of U.S. military installations throughout the region. Missile defense systems were activated in Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, as well as in Kuwait, underscoring how quickly the confrontation spread beyond Iranian territory.

The renewed fighting appears to have shattered the temporary Memorandum of Understanding reached on June 17, which had created a 60-day window for indirect negotiations aimed at preventing a broader regional war. As part of Wednesday’s response, the Trump administration revoked temporary sanctions waivers that had allowed limited Iranian oil exports under the agreement, with the president vowing once again to drive Iranian oil exports to zero.

Both governments have accused the other of violating the agreement.

Iranian officials contend the U.S. military strikes represented a major breach of the memorandum, while American officials maintain Iran’s attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz constituted the first significant violation of the ceasefire and required a forceful response.

The latest military action also came despite expectations that both sides would observe a temporary pause in hostilities during the funeral period for Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Instead, the conflict intensified, raising fresh concerns about stability throughout the Middle East and the security of one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

Trump’s comments suggest the administration is shifting away from diplomacy and back toward a policy of maximum pressure.

Days before the latest strikes, the president warned that the United States would either secure an agreement requiring Iran to completely dismantle its nuclear program and end support for regional proxy groups, or the U.S. military would “finish the job” by eliminating Tehran’s remaining military capabilities. On Wednesday, he reiterated that while negotiations could continue, he no longer believed they would produce meaningful results.

The renewed fighting has also rattled global energy markets, with renewed concerns that continued attacks in the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes. As military operations continue and diplomatic efforts appear to be unraveling, the prospect of a prolonged regional conflict has once again moved to the forefront of international concern.
