U.S.–Iran Ceasefire Collapses as Trump Orders Massive Strikes Across Iran

The temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran has collapsed, with President Donald Trump declaring the agreement over and ordering multiple waves of military strikes against targets across Iran.

The conflict rapidly escalated over the weekend following a series of Iranian attacks on commercial shipping vessels and subsequent U.S. retaliation, sending global energy markets sharply higher and raising fears of a prolonged regional war.

U.S. Strikes Roughly 140 Iranian Targets

The latest round of fighting began after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked a Cyprus-flagged container ship.

In response, Trump directed U.S. Central Command to carry out severe retaliatory strikes against Iranian military infrastructure.

American forces struck approximately 140 targets, including missile positions, drone sites and communications infrastructure in southern Iran.

Iran quickly responded by launching waves of missiles and drones at U.S. military assets and regional allies.

Air raid sirens and security warnings were reported in Bahrain and Kuwait, while Jordan’s military intercepted several missiles that crossed into its airspace.

Iran also claimed that its forces heavily damaged a U.S.-led command center in Jordan.

Iran Declares Strait of Hormuz Closed

The fighting has also intensified around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.

The IRGC officially declared the waterway closed, accusing commercial vessels of using unauthorized routes to bypass Iranian authority.

Trump and CENTCOM rejected Iran’s declaration, maintaining that the strait remains open and that American forces are positioned to ensure the continued movement of global shipping.

The confrontation immediately affected energy markets.

Global oil prices increased by more than 4 percent Monday morning, with Brent crude climbing toward $79 per barrel as traders reacted to the risk of prolonged shipping disruptions.

The U.S. and Iran are offering conflicting accounts on the status of the Strait of Hormuz following intense military exchanges. While President Trump stated the waterway is open after U.S. strikes, Tehran claims it is closed until further notice. https://t.co/sSBJKua7U5

Trump Rejects New Deal Without Iranian Surrender

Trump has abandoned the fragile memorandum of understanding signed last month and issued a new ultimatum to Tehran.

The president has taken an uncompromising approach, signaling that there will be no agreement without Iran’s surrender.

Although diplomatic discussions through international mediators could technically continue, Trump has expressed deep skepticism that a peaceful resolution can still be reached.

The breakdown has also been fueled by increasingly personal rhetoric.

Trump posted warnings that thousands of U.S. missiles were “Locked and Loaded,” citing intelligence reports and public statements from Tehran threatening an assassination attempt against him.

The Pentagon is now reviewing the American military’s force posture in the Middle East as the administration prepares for the possibility of prolonged, multibillion-dollar operations aimed at permanently suppressing Iran’s regional military capabilities.
