LEWISTON, Maine — Lewiston endured another chaotic Monday as police investigated an early-morning shooting before officers were later drawn into an unrelated high-speed pursuit that ended with a police cruiser crashing into a suspect vehicle and multiple people reportedly being taken into custody.
The two incidents came as Maine’s second-largest city continues struggling with a surge in gun violence that has increasingly involved juveniles and repeat offenders — and as residents continue asking what more can be done to restore order to neighborhoods where gunfire has become an unsettlingly familiar occurrence.
By Monday night, police had spent hours responding to the separate incidents.
What was less visible was Lewiston’s political leadership.
Gunshot victim brought to hospital before dawn
The first incident began at approximately 4:45 a.m., when a person suffering from a gunshot wound was transported by private vehicle to Central Maine Medical Center, according to the Lewiston Police Department.
Preliminary information indicated the shooting occurred in the area of Bradley Street.
Lewiston police opened an investigation with assistance from the Maine State Police, and the State Police Crime Laboratory was later observed at the scene as investigators continued processing evidence.
Police have not publicly identified the victim or disclosed the person’s condition.

The shooting represents another violent incident in a city that had already recorded 20 shooting events during the first seven months of 2026.
High-speed pursuit ends in crash
Hours later, Lewiston officers were dealing with another major police response across the city.
Sources told The Maine Wire that a Lewiston police officer escaped injury after the officer’s cruiser crashed into a vehicle driven by a suspect during a pursuit.
At least one person from the suspect vehicle was initially taken into custody while several others reportedly fled, according to sources.
Police subsequently taped off a parking lot on Bartlett Street, where officers maintained a heavy presence Monday night.
A second suspect was later taken into custody on Walnut Street in connection with the earlier pursuit and crash, according to sources.
The pursuit was not believed to be connected to the Bradley Street shooting.
Authorities had not immediately released a complete account of what prompted the pursuit, the identities of those detained or what charges could result.
Twenty shootings in seven months
Monday’s violence did not occur in a vacuum.
Lewiston officials recently acknowledged that the city recorded 20 shooting incidents during the first seven months of 2026, an extraordinary number for a city of approximately 37,000 residents.
Much of the city’s recent violence has involved young people. City officials convened a special meeting to address youth gun violence, bringing together police, prosecutors, school officials and others to discuss possible solutions.
Despite the workload, Lewiston police have reported clearing roughly 69 percent of the city’s shooting cases.
The department has also been operating with officer vacancies while city leaders have considered additional resources, including increased overtime for foot and bicycle patrols.
Monday illustrated the demands confronting those officers.
Before sunrise, detectives were investigating another person shot in Lewiston. By nighttime, officers were dealing with an unrelated pursuit, a crashed police cruiser, fleeing suspects and a significant police operation around Bartlett and Walnut streets.
Where is the mayor?
The latest incidents are also likely to renew questions about Mayor Carl Sheline’s public response as Lewiston struggles through one of its most troubling stretches of recurring gun violence.
To be clear, Sheline has spoken publicly about the broader problem.
Following another burst of violence this summer, Sheline called what was happening in Lewiston “insane” and said the increase in youth gun violence was unacceptable. He has also urged parents to become more involved and participated in city efforts to address the problem.
But the question is not whether Sheline has ever spoken about violence.
The question is whether the mayor has demonstrated the same urgency and highly visible presence following repeated shootings in his own city that he has shown on other political and social issues.
That contrast became particularly noticeable following the July 13 fatal shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero by an ICE agent in Biddeford.
Sheline traveled roughly 35 miles from Lewiston to Biddeford following the shooting. The next evening, he appeared at a vigil in Lewiston for Guerrero and delivered forceful remarks about the federal immigration agency.
“We are here tonight because ICE is shooting our neighbors dead in our streets,” Sheline said at the vigil, according to published reports. He also confirmed that he had been in Biddeford the previous night.
Sheline’s willingness to travel to another Maine city following a controversial shooting involving federal immigration enforcement presents a stark contrast for residents who have watched police repeatedly respond to gunfire in Lewiston neighborhoods.
The comparison does not mean Sheline has ignored Lewiston’s violence. He hasn’t.
But it raises a legitimate question about visibility and priorities.
Following Monday’s shooting and subsequent police pursuit, there was no immediate public statement from Sheline addressing either incident.
Police respond. City Hall remains quiet.
Lewiston’s police officers have been unmistakably visible throughout the city’s violent year.
They have responded to shootings, recovered firearms, arrested suspects and investigated cases while working through staffing shortages. State and federal law-enforcement agencies have increasingly assisted local investigators.
Residents have noticed the violence as well. During an earlier surge this year, some Lewiston residents publicly called for greater action from both the mayor and City Council.
Monday brought another reminder of why.
A gunshot victim was brought to the hospital before most residents were awake.
State Police assisted with the investigation.
Hours later came another major police response: a high-speed pursuit, a crashed cruiser, suspects reportedly fleeing and officers searching another Lewiston neighborhood.
The police were there.
The investigators were there.
Once again, the question for City Hall is whether Lewiston’s political leadership will match the urgency being demanded of the officers working its streets.
For residents hearing gunfire near their homes, seeing police tape appear in their neighborhoods and watching shooting after shooting accumulate on the city’s statistics, occasional statements may no longer be enough.
And after another violent day in Lewiston, the contrast leaves Mayor Sheline with a difficult question:
If violence elsewhere in Maine warrants the mayor’s personal presence and a forceful public response, when does the continuing violence in his own city demand the same urgency?

The mayor of Lewiston sounds like he couldn’t care less about the violence happening. When I hear Troy Jackson and his phony voice & what he can do when he gets to Washington it makes me laugh because I think he is a pee on with a big mouth.
In a few years, will also be dealing with the consequences of the pregnancies LePage mentioned.
It sure would be nice to know the demographics for these shootings.
