The Maine State Police are investigating after an 88-year-old New Hampshire man allegedly caused a wrong-way crash on I-295 in Portland on Saturday.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., the Bangor Regional Communications Center received a call reporting a wrong-way driver travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-295 in Portland.
Just moments later, both the Bangor and Portland communications centers began receiving multiple calls reporting a head-on crash near Tukey’s Bridge and Exit 8 in Portland.
Portland Police, state troopers, and the Portland Fire Department responded to the scene.
An initial investigation revealed that Ronald Ferguson, 88, of Nelson, NH, was operating a 2020 Subaru Outback when he mistakenly entered the southbound lanes of I-295 while traveling in the wrong direction.
Shortly after entering, Ferguson struck a 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse head-on.
Ferguson, his female passenger, and the female driver of the Mitsubishi Eclipse were all transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Two lanes of I-295 were shut down for approximately two hours.
