Maine lobster is now set to be excluded from Canada’s tariffs on U.S. goods, imposed in response to tariffs President Donald Trump levied earlier this month.
The White House announced last week that the United States would impose a new 50 percent tariff on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian products as trade negotiations continue to break down.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters Saturday that Canada is “at war” with the United States on trade.
While in Brewer Monday, Vice President J.D. Vance defended the tariffs imposed by the U.S., saying that America is “going to fight back against unfair trade practices, whether it’s coming from China or Canada.”
Although Canada’s retaliatory tariffs cover about $20 billion in U.S. products, the country’s finance ministry announced in a post on X that seafood would be removed from the tariff list, after initially saying the $300 million trading sector would be affected.

The Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA) praised the Canadian government’s decision in a statement issued Thursday morning.
“Keeping seafood tariff-free protects our shared supply chain and avoids unnecessary economic harm on both sides of the border,” said MLA Executive Director Patrice McCarron.
“We appreciate Canada’s decision to listen to the concerns raised by the seafood industry and remove seafood from these tariffs,” McCarron added. “We urge both governments to continue protecting the longstanding tariff-free trade in lobster that benefits fishermen, businesses and coastal communities throughout North America.”

Canada pays their Laya bouts to pick lobster meat so the Laya bouts can qualify (days worked) for state medical coverage.
Or could it be that since the trump admin has been enforcing the territorial fishing boundaries that biden decided to overlook the canooks have no choice but to play by the rules.
Fifty – sixty years ago we thought of Canada as a quaint country neighbor .
We thought their “ European” influences were kinda cool .
We accepted THEIR cash at par .
Today ……NOT so much .
If they want to get pissy with us let them .
They need us a hell of a lot more than we need them .
They should spend their time trying to put out their forest fires , and less time needling us .

It got airtime on top-40 pop radio stations too.
Canadians have harbored ingratitude/resentment about the US for a long time. This time, however Mark Carney’s activism is linked to attempts to interfere with the US midterm elections and his pro-China trade positions.
Canada is a mess. Too many immigrants, too much demand on its faltering health care system, and its economy is far from healthy.
I’m with President Trump. Set Canada back a few notches – they deserve it, eh?
