Dr. Mehmet Oz, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is set to appear Tuesday in Philadelphia alongside senior federal law enforcement officials to announce what the U.S. Department of Justice is describing as a significant health care fraud takedown and the launch of a new anti-fraud initiative.

The Justice Department described the case as a “significant health care fraud takedown” and said it will also unveil a new District Anti-Fraud Initiative for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. While officials have not yet released details about the scope of the investigation or the individuals and organizations involved, the participation of senior leaders from the Justice Department, CMS, HHS Office of Inspector General, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office suggests the operation involved extensive coordination among federal and state agencies.
Oz’s appearance also marks one of his highest-profile public events since becoming CMS administrator. Since taking office, he has largely focused on implementing President Donald Trump’s health care agenda, emphasizing program integrity, reducing waste, fraud and abuse, and increasing accountability within Medicare and Medicaid.
