The legacy liberal journalistic Bible of Massachusetts has abandoned U.S. Sen. Ed Markey in favor of his much-younger fellow Democrat.
The editorial board of the Boston Globe decided the 80-year-old Markey – a member of Congress for nearly a half-century – is ready for the scrap heap, not another election.
“It is true that Markey still looks and sounds sharp, and that he brings much valuable experience to the table,” the board wrote.
But it fell down on the side of U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, 47, as an “agent of change” who can help revive the Democratic Party.
The board praised Moulton’s independence for trying to oust then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and calling for Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.
The Globe damned Markey, previously a longtime U.S. House member, with faint praise, calling him “the picture of sharpness and vigor.”
But it said he’s so old he might not even be able to finish another six-year term.
Markey told the paper this would be his last race, that he would resign the moment he determined he could not do the job.
“Even if you believe 80 is the new 70, it would be fantastical to pretend that voters shouldn’t be concerned about his ability to finish his term,” the board wrote.
Markey and his challenger are set to square off today in a TV primary debate hosted by WCVB-TV, the Globe and Boston’s public radio station WBUR.
If the polls are right, Markey can order the champagne, the Globe be damned.
The primary is September 1, just under two weeks from now.
A University of Massachusetts/WCVB poll released Sunday showed Markey with a 28-point lead – 60 to 32 – while a Suffolk University/Globe survey has the incumbent winning 52 to 38, according to The Hill’s Ryan Mancini.
Polymarket gives Markey the win hands down, his odds of victory 94:8 against Moulton.
Ex-Marine John Deaton has no Republican opposition in the GOP primary but his chances of election in Massachusetts come November 3 are as likely as snow in July.
Polymarket odds have the Democrats retaining the seat at 98:2.
There are also four “independents” running, but if Markey’s poll numbers hold he’s a good bet for six more years no matter how many votes they peel off.

Hasn’t Markey done enough damage ?
