PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police made dozens of arrests on warrants, drug charges and alleged violations of release conditions last week as officers responded to hundreds of traffic stops, welfare checks and complaints involving disruptive or suspicious behavior.

The Portland Police Department released its latest weekly calls-for-service statistics as part of what officials described as an ongoing effort to provide the public with greater transparency about police activity in Maine’s largest city.

Warrants were the most common arrest-related charge during the reporting period, appearing in 18 cases, according to the department.

Unlawful possession of drugs followed closely with 17 charges, while officers recorded 16 charges for violating conditions of release.

Police also reported nine criminal trespass charges and five assault charges among the week’s most common arrest offenses.

The numbers provide a snapshot of the wide range of issues Portland officers are confronting on a daily basis, from routine traffic enforcement to drug offenses and repeat contacts involving individuals already subject to court-imposed release conditions.

Traffic enforcement accounted for the largest single category of calls for service.

Officers conducted 208 motor vehicle stops during the week.

Police also responded to 145 911 hang-up calls and 116 complaints categorized by the department as “person(s) bothering.”

Officers conducted 83 well-being checks and 58 pedestrian checks. Another 58 calls involved reports of suspicious activity.

The department’s weekly figures do not necessarily represent individual suspects, as one arrest can involve multiple charges and officers can respond to the same individual more than once during a reporting period.

Still, the prevalence of drug possession charges and alleged violations of release conditions could draw attention as Portland continues to grapple with public safety concerns involving substance use, homelessness, repeat offenders and quality-of-life complaints in parts of the city.
