Doctors in the large Central Maine Healthcare network that includes the Central Maine Medical Center are now asking if parents want a family Narcan kit when they bring their babies in for routine checkups.

The question on a routine pediatric visit form highlights the suggestion that drug overdoses are so common in Maine that there may be a real need for families to keep Narcan with their Band-Aids in the household first-aid kit.
The Maine Wire was sent a blank form from Central Maine Healthcare, asking parents to fill in information for a two-month- or four-month-old baby’s standard checkup.
The form asks expected questions like whether the baby is on any medication or has any allergies, but also asks if parents would like to take home a Narcan kit.
“To ensure the well-being of our community, we are offering Narcan (naloxone) kits for families. Narcan is a lifesaving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses in an emergency situation. Narcan kits are free of charge and come with an instructional handout,” reads the questionnaire.
While the kit would, of course, be necessary for habitual drug users who put their children at risk of opioid overdoses, it could also be necessary for other parents whose children could come into contact with drugs in public parks or at school.
According to the Maine Drug Data Hub’s report on drug overdoses from June (the most recent available data), 2025 saw 360 suspected non-fatal drug overdoses involving an emergency medical response among minors.
From January through June of 2026, there were 191 suspected non-fatal overdoses among minors.
The actual number of non-fatal overdoses among minors could be higher since the data only include incidents in which emergency services responded.
In June of this year, a Penobscot sheriff’s deputy was forced to administer multiple doses of Narcan to an infant in Eddington after the baby overdosed.
In connection, an arrest warrant was issued for Eddington School Board member Brittany Wood, 36, on charges including endangering the welfare of a child.
She allegedly evaded capture for days before eventually being taken into custody.

Maine now is leading the nation in everything that is wrong with our country and this is the prefect addition to that honor. Well done Maine, I am sure it can get worse!!!!!!!!
