Candidates for Congress in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District are not required to submit their first financial reports to the Federal Election Commission until Oct. 16, but Republican Bruce Poliquin announced Wednesday his campaign has already raised $220,000.

The Poliquin for Congress campaign touted the high fundraising figure in a press release provided to The Maine Wire. The campaign says the strong fundraising effort shows that Poliquin is the GOP candidate with the best chances of defeating the eventual Democratic nominee.

“We have received overwhelming and enthusiastic support for our campaign in just 36 short days,” Poliquin said in the press release.

“Grassroot Republicans from western, northern, downeast, and central Maine want a proven conservative leader who shares their values and can unite the Party to win the general election,” he said. “Our campaign is proving that I am the only candidate who can defeat the big government, big spending, high debt liberals next year.”

According to the campaign, the donations came from 184 donors with nearly $80,000 coming via online donations.
