The outlet also reported Shah had the backing of Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree.
Shah announced in January that he would be leaving Maine to become the principal deputy to outgoing CDC Director Rochelle Walensky.

As Director of Illinois’ Department of Public Health (IDPH) under then-Gov Bruce Rauner, Shah was broadly criticized by both Republican and Democratic elected officials for his handling of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at a veterans’ home.
The 2015 outbreak ultimately resulted in the deaths of thirteen veteran residents, leading to multiple investigations into Shah’s actions and million-dollar settlements with Illinois families.
Shah’s tenure ended with Rauner’s failed 2018 re-election bid, but he quickly landed in Maine just prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.
As Maine’s top public health official, Shah became a media darling by offering video briefings to a scared public, much like Anthony Fauci and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Shah and his wife, Kara Palamountain, are something of a public health power couple.
Palamountain is a professor at Northwestern University where she co-founded a university-affiliated biotech company, Minute Molecular Diagnostics.

The company has since been acquired by the Texas-based Nuclein, and it’s not clear whether Palamountain has any ongoing involvement.
