Thursday marked the first time since 1972’s Apollo 17 mission that a United States spacecraft has landed on the moon.

On Thursday evening the Houston, Texas based company, Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus Lander touched down on the moon.

During the landing, Odysseus began experiencing communication errors, and flight controllers were initially concerned that the lander had not touched-down upright, but Intuitive Machines was able to reestablish a connection and verify the orientation of the lander.

“Odysseus is alive and well. Flight controllers are communicating and commanding the vehicle to download science data. The lander has good telemetry and solar charging,” said Intuitive Machines on X.

The success of Intuitive Machines’ landing marks a significant victory for advocates of private sector space exploration.

The mission, which was sponsored by NASA, also involved Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which provided the rocket for the launch.

NASA administrator Bill Nelson, a former Democrat U.S. Senator from Florida, celebrated the landing as a great victory for humanity.

“Today, for the first time in half a century, America has returned to the Moon,” said Sen. Nelson on X, “What a triumph for humanity. Odysseus has taken the moon.”

Intuitive Machines was issued a $118 million contract to deliver scientific instruments to the moon in preparation for the planned Artemis missions, which are eventually meant to put Americans back on the moon, and establish a base there.

Investors in Intuitive Machines include notable names such as Kingstown Capital Management, which is the largest shareholder with a reported 11.14 million share stake. Other significant investors include Hudson Bay Capital Management, LMR Partners, P. Schoenfeld Asset Management, and Taconic Capital Advisors.

The next Artemis launch is scheduled for November 2025, but, given an extensive history of delays for the program, it is unclear when, if ever, the program’s goals will be accomplished.

My guess is that the Artemis mission astronauts will be well schooled in pronoun usage and DEI protocols since NASA is sponsoring them.

Only a complete fool actually believes that we ever landed on the moon to begin with; it was all staged in Nevada and the astronauts were only in low earth orbit the entire time.
