Maine Senator Angus King, a self-described independent who caucuses with Democrats, has introduced legislation that would ban energy exports, which King has called the United States’ “principal advantage in the world economy,” to foreign adversaries.
Sen. King joined with three Senate Democrats to introduce the “Protecting American Households from Rising Energy Costs Act,” which would ban the export of crude oil or liquefied natural gas (LNG) to China, Russia, Iran and North Korea.

King, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has previously warned that U.S. exports of natural gas are “subsidizing Chinese manufacturing,” and recently applauded the Biden Administration for pausing approval of new LNG export facilities in late January.
“With heating costs in flux, climate change shifting global temperature norms, and global conflicts impacting energy prices, it is vital that we closely consider energy export goals to make sure we are prioritizing American families,” Sen. King said last week when introducing the legislation.

“The Protecting American Households from Rising Energy Costs Act would ensure that America provides our nation with a vital natural resource before subsidizing manufacturing and other industries that benefit our adversaries,” King said. “This is a commonsense approach that will support America’s national defense and help to keep energy costs as low as we can for everyday Americans.”
In addition to Sen. King, the legislation is sponsored by Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.).
