Portland Police announced Sunday that they have arrested a suspect in relation to a homicide that occurred over the weekend in the area of Union Station Plaza.

Just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, Portland Police responded to a report that a person had been shot in the area of 263 St. John Street.

The victim was identified as 30-year-old Raoul Mapendo Tshiyuka of Portland, and was transported to the Maine Medical Center, where he later died, police said.

An autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Tshiyuka died from a gunshot wound, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Police say a person of interest was quickly identified and a request to locate was issued statewide, which led to the suspect’s vehicle being located by the South Portland Police Department at 77 Wainwright Circle East in South Portland at about 9:30 a.m.

A search warrant was executed at the South Portland resident by the Portland Police Special Reaction Team (SRT), with assistance from the Southern Maine Regional SWAT team.

During the execution of another search warrant at 66 Wellesley Estates in Portland, the suspect contacted the Portland Regional Communication Center and told police he was at 224 Ocean Ave. in Portland.

Portland SRT and the Southern Maine Regional SWAT team were sent to the Ocean Ave. address and arrested 36-year-old Abdirahman Mahmoud without incident, police said.

Mahmoud was charged with murder, and is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail.
