Jared Golden, Chellie Pingree Want Illegal Aliens Counted in Census

Democrats claim the proposal is unconstitutional and violates the right to representation of immigrants, and might lead to a less accurate census.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to pass a bill that would require noncitizens to be excluded from the census when determining the population of a state for the apportionment of U.S. representatives and votes in the Electoral College.

Both U.S. Representatives from Maine, Jared Golden (D) and Chellie Pingree (D), joined every Democrat in voting against the bill — in favor of including illegal aliens on the U.S. census to count towards the proportional allotment of members of the House to each state and to the election of the president.

The bill in question would require that the decennial census questionnaire include a checkbox for respondents to indicate whether the respondent and each household member is a U.S. citizen.

In 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked then-President Donald Trump from adding a citizenship question to the census.

Under the bill, the U.S. Department of Commerce would be required to make the number of citizens and noncitizens in each state public.

Most notably, the legislation would also require the exclusion of noncitizens in the statement that is sent by the president to Congress indicating the population in each state for the purpose of reapportioning the number of House representatives and votes in the Electoral College each state has.

Republicans argue that Democratic politicians, by their opposition to excluding noncitizens from the census, are looking to increase their political power through additional representation in Congress and more electoral votes.

“We should not reward states and cities that violate federal immigration laws and maintain sanctuary policies with increased Congressional representation,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said in a Wednesday statement after the bill’s passage. “Common sense dictates that only American citizens should be counted for electoral apportionment.”

Congressman Golden and his fellow House Democrats were slammed by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) for their opposition to the proposal.

“Jared Golden will put non-citizens ahead of American citizens to obtain more political power,” NRCC spokesperson Savannah Viar said. “As border chaos spirals out of control – endangering the lives and livelihoods of American citizens – it is beyond the pale that his priorities don’t include his constituents’ needs.”

Democrats claim the proposal is unconstitutional and violates the right to representation of immigrants, and might lead to a less accurate census.

“The Fourteenth Amendment makes the census and reapportionment apply to ‘all persons,'” Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin wrote on X Wednesday. “Constitutional originalists, textualists and followers of precedent must reject unlawful GOP attempts to confine the census and Congressional apportionment to citizens.”

Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Rep. Nanette D. Barragán (D-Calif.), called the bill “extreme” and claimed its passage would discourage immigrants from responding to the census.

“It’s a bill that threatens the equal and fair representation of immigrant communities,” Rep. Barragán said on the House Floor Wednesday.

Ooooh a check mark box, that should solve everything. Why would you think someone who has already broken the law would answer honestly anyway? Republications don’t give a ship about this or you they’re all the same corrupt, self serving, asswipes. Immediate deportation is the correct response for the illegal’s and congress.

There is only ONE thing Maine desperately needs to do, and that is repeal “Ranked Choice Voting” which is the only reason the little turd Jared Golden is occupying a seat in our House. He certainly isn’t representing his constituents, who were cheated out of their votes for Poliquin. NOTHING else matters until this one thing is done !!

It’s cringeworthy when people claim that the Democrats are beholden to the radical left-wing members of the Party. From what I can tell, the whole bunch of these pathetic political hacks are all anti-American Leftists.

“Originalism” – they cry of those who define what our 2nd Admemdment truly means. OK, if that’s the case then tell me where in Article 2, Section 1 or our Constitution is the word “citizen”.

I’ll save you the time, it doesn’t. It states, “Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.”

I have a better idea. Run them out of the state. The Left would do it if the immigrants were Trump supporters. Be courageous. If you see illegal immigrants moving into your community, run them out.Make them want to leave. Don’t let them be housed in public housing. Don’t let your town or county budget pay for their housing. Stand up and fight for your safety.

This is misleading. way back at the beginning of the Republic, the constitution included the census, and directed that it include the number of slaves in each state. At the time, slaves were not citizens. Also, the language says to count the persons, not just the citizens, so to omit them from the counting is unconstitutional. Finally, if we are going to have any federal programs whatsoever that address noncitizens, it becomes important to know what the distribution of them may be, across the great land of ours! Or else we end up sending money to the wrong districts. Next time, include the back ground instead of just touting GOP xenophobic talking points.

Why would an illegal alien even bother filling out a census form? They’re here illegally to begin with, can get gov’t handouts, more than likely don’t pay taxes, can kill people on the turnpike and not be deported, deal in dope without consequence etc. A piece of paper with a checkbox will go in the trash. How does the gov’t even know where to send the form to them? Down the shit hole we go, wheeeeeee!

“can kill people on the turnpike”  This story has not been in the PPH yet. They are keeping it under the rug. Who cares about a Maine woman killed by an illegal on the turnpike.

Remember, these are members of the same political party that was founded by people who demanded that another disenfranchised minority, human beings held in bandage, be counted in the census. There is no difference between the Democratic Party of 1860 and the Democratic Party of today. Racist, authoritarian and driven by a desire for raw political power.
