Maine’s Taxpayer-Funded Migrant Groups Upset at Biden’s New Asylum Seeker Limits

The Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition (MIRC) has issued a statement condemning President Joe Biden’s new executive order, which aims to reduce the number of asylum seekers admitted into the U.S. to roughly one million per year, for being too strict.

“MIRC has long advocated for immigration policies that recognize and value the contributions of asylum-seeking individuals and refugees to our nation. Restricting the ability to apply for asylum is both ineffective and dangerously increases the risks faced by vulnerable individuals,” said MIRC.

“MIRC urges the Biden administration to reconsider this harmful change and to pursue policies that uphold human rights and reflect our values of justice and inclusivity,” they added.

The organization was angered that the new rules, which went into effect on Wednesday, will allegedly limit the number of asylum seekers allowed to enter the country, even as Maine and other states have become overwhelmed by the virtually unlimited flow of jobless, homeless migrants entering the U.S. and seeking taxpayer-funded accommodations.

At the same time the number of migrants flowing to Maine has surged, MIRC has seen its annual budget grow considerably, according to publicly available tax filings.

In 2022, the organization took in more than $2.5 million, including more than $1 million in taxpayer-funded grants.

In 2018, prior to the 2019 start of the present wave of non-citizen migration to Maine, MIRC’s annual budget was just $110,212.

From 2018 to 2022, MIRC Executive Director Mufalo Chitam has seen her salary increase from $51,833 to $98,434.

Under Biden’s new rule, asylum seekers will be limited if daily border encounters reach 2,500 per day, and restrictions will not be lifted until the daily number is down to 1,500 per day for a full week.

According to MIRC, limiting migrant border-crossing to these levels is fundamentally un-American, because it fails to provide aid or show compassion to asylum seekers.

The group called on Biden to address the “underlying cause” of immigration rather than close the border, and argued that shutting the borer will make the immigration crisis worse.

MIRC did not provide any reasons why the illegal immigration crisis would be worsened by closing the border.

Throughout its statement, MIRC continually considered asylum seekers crossing the border illegally to be innocents seeking refuge from genuine persecution or other serious distress.

This is far from an accurate portrayal of “asylum seekers” in general, according to asylum data tracked by the Syracuse University.

According to the University’s TRAC program, less than half of asylum applicants have had their claims approved under Biden, and less than one-third were approved under former President Donald Trump.

Claims are denied in cases where individuals do not meet the criteria for filing a legitimate asylum claim, such as in the case on an individual who is merely seeking economic betterment.

Additionally, since 2019, there has been a surge in “defensive” claims rather than “affirmative” claims.

With an affirmative claim, a migrant crosses the border an immediately claims asylum with U.S. officials; however, with a defensive claim, the asylum request is made by a migrant who entered the U.S. unlawfully and later had an encounter with law enforcement.

Even the Biden’s far-left Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, who has been blamed for large parts of the border crisis, has admitted that many “asylum seekers” are actually just gaming the system.

In many cases, people cross the border illegally, then claim asylum even though they do not meet the legal criteria because they are then allowed to remain in the U.S. on parole until their claim is evaluated.

Because of the magnitude of the border crisis, asylum claims often take up to five years or more to evaluate, and, during most of that waiting period, the immigrants are allowed to live and work in the U.S.

If the claims are denied, the illegal alien is expected to leave the country on their own, although there’s little data available on the actual rate of so-called “self-deportation.”

As MIRC was criticizing Biden’s executive order for being too strict, conservatives, including Trump, were criticizing the order for being far too lenient, and claiming that it will worsen the border crisis.

“Millions of people have poured into our country and now, after nearly four years, of this failed weak leadership, pathetic leadership, Crooked Joe Biden is pretending to finally do something about the border,” said Trump. “Joe Biden’s executive order won’t stop the invasion, it’s weak and its pathetic. It will actually make the invasion worse.”

The truth is that Joe Biden’s Executive Order won’t STOP the invasion—it will make the invasion WORSE.

Trump’s campaign also released a fact sheet claiming that the executive order will allow 5,000 illegal entries every day, and provide taxpayer money to house, and legally represent illegal immigrants, among numerous other ill effects.

Just days before announcing his executive order, Biden quietly closed the asylum cases of 350,000 illegal immigrants, effectively granting them the ability to stay in the U.S. indefinitely, with no fear of deportation.

That decision, which was revealed in a New York Post article, suggests that Biden’s executive order is politically motivated, rather than a genuine attempt to secure the border.

Too bad, so sad for all the illegals eating up our tax dollars. Biden’s move is just theatre. The border needs to be CLOSED.

    DEPORT ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS!
They are not seeking asylum! The only reason they are here is to steal every penny they can from you and me. Our government wants to replace Americans with third worlders who cannot speak English, do not want to assimilate to OUR culture and who demand a life style that we are not providing your own veterans and seniors!
Thousands enter the USA illegally daily and therefore need to be returned to their own country asap. They are using fake claims in an attempt to stay here and the ‘left’ is bowing down to them.

Just like the rampant gender insanity wave, the illegal alien support trade has fought its way to the money trough and become its own industrial complex, with appropriate connections to the flow of “sugar” from towns, states, and DC. One they are anchored in as a facet of the “economy,” it is virtually impossible to clear them out.

As Howie Carr always says, what begins as “activism” soon becomes a “cause” which before you know it becomes a “racket.”

Vito Corleone built his empire in the wake of prohibition; he found a “need” and “satisfied” it.

The gender mutilation “Doctors” and the illegal support con are at the moment “legal.” Because the right folks are following the money, and seeing that those who should get a “taste” in gratitude are smiling too.

We have met the enemy and it is us (US gov’t).
