A Venezuelan national living in the United States illegally shot a Texas police officer multiple times during a domestic violence call early Sunday morning, according to the San Antonio Police Department and a report from Fox News.

According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, three officers responded to an apartment for a report of a domestic violence incident at about 3:15 a.m. on Sunday.

Upon arrival, police learned that a female victim had been assaulted by her boyfriend, Chief McManus said.

When police found the suspected male assailant lying in bed with a rifle by his side, he began shooting at the three officers, who returned fire, he said.

One female San Antonio Police officer was shot multiple times, and was taken to the hospital to undergo surgery.

The male suspect was found deceased in the apartment following the shootout, though the San Antonio Police chief said it was unclear whether he had taken his own life or died as a result of the officers’ return fire.

Multiple law enforcement sources told Fox News that the male suspect is a Venezuelan national who was apprehended by Border Patrol after illegally crossing into Eagle Pass, Texas, in November 2023.

The illegal migrant, 25-year-old Jorge Chacon-Gutierrez, was released in the U.S. with a court date set for April 2026, the sources told Fox News.
