The scammers typically call residents claiming to be responsible for arrest warrants or legal action against them, and asking for payments in exchange for relief of the charges or legal action.
The sheriff’s office is unsure how many people are involved in the scam, and did not mention how many victims have been tricked into paying them.
The Sheriff’s office has reassured Oxford residents that they will never receive a call from a deputy demanding funds for any reason, and urged Mainers not to share their financial information over the phone.
If a resident believes that the call is actually from a deputy, they are instructed to hang up and call the dispatch office to determine the veracity of the call.
The scammers remain at large, and the sheriff’s department has not released any or suggested they have any information on the culprits.
