Portland Police announced on Monday that they arrested 44-year-old Ramon Nunez-Rosario in connection to the assault.

According to police, shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, officers were dispatched to the wooded area behind the Homeless Services Center at 654 Riverside Street for a report of a male suspect who was assaulting people.

Police say their investigation revealed Nunez-Rosario had struck two people with a baseball bat, causing serious injuries.

Both victims were transported the Maine Medical Center, one having sustained life-threatening injuries from the assault.

Police said on Monday that the victim with life-threatening injuries was in stable condition.

Nunez-Rosario was charged with elevated aggravated assault and aggravated assault and is being held at the Cumberland County Jail.

The 258-bed Homeless Services Center, which opened in March 2023, is a low barrier homeless shelter, meaning that it does not require sobriety or background checks for its residents.

According to a city report, the HSC provides phone and computer charging stations, showers, meals served on site, free laundry facilities, secure storage, a library, and Narcan.
