U.S. Border Patrol agents in Caswell recently located and captured two Romanian nationals who illegally crossed the northern border into Maine by using an unmanned aerial system (UAS).

Chief Patrol Agent Juan Bernal of Maine’s Houlton Sector, which encompasses the entire state and the northeastern corner of the U.S.-Canada border, as well as Maine’s coastline, announced the arrest Wednesday morning in a post to X.

“Thanks to a tip from a concerned citizen, Border Patrol Agents near Caswell, Maine used a small Unmanned Aerial System to locate and arrest two subjects from Romania, who had recently crossed the border illegally,” Bernal said.

This is not the first instance of Border Patrol apprehending Romanian nationals who illegally crossed the border into northern Maine.

In November 2023, Border Patrol agents in Hodgdon arrested 20 Romanian nationals who crossed the U.S.-Canada border illegally in four different vehicles in what the agency described as a “border rush.”

Two of the 20 Romanian nationals were positive matches with Transnational Criminal Organized Crime and were processed for expedited removal hearings.

U.S. Senator from Maine Susan Collins (R) revealed in a December 2023 speech on the Senate floor that 18 out of the 20 Romanian nationals taken into custody as a result of the incident were “simply released into the local community” after processing.

In fiscal year 2025 (FY25) to date — October through December 2024 — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported 70 migrant encounters in the Houlton Sector.

In FY24, the agency reported a total of 344 encounters in the Houlton Sector, up from 300 in FY23, and just over six times the amount of migrant apprehensions in 2021.
