Washington, D.C. Begins Dismantling Black Lives Matter Plaza and Painting Over BLM Mural

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser ordered the dismantling of the city’s Black Lives Matter (BLM) Plaza and the destruction of its muralโ€”which she commissionedโ€”with crews beginning demolition work on Monday following pressure from Republicans.

“The mural inspired millions of people, and helped our people through a very painful period, but now we can’t afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference. The devastating impact of the federal job cuts must be our number one concern,” said Mayor Bowser.

Bowser’s announcement came just one day after Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) put forward a bill that would require the city to remove the BLM mural from the street, part of the President’s Park near the White House, and redesignate the street Liberty Plaza.

If the bill passes, Congress will withhold funds from the city until Bowser fully complies.

President Donald Trump posted footage on Monday showing the massive yellow lettering, reading “BLACK LIVES MATTER,” spanning 48 feet, being torn up by construction crews.

The demolition began with the removal of bollards that have obstructed travel on the road since the mural was added nearly five years ago.

Bowser first established the plaza in June 2020, near the end of President Trump’s term, as BLM rioters burned and pillaged their way across multiple cities in protest of the death of career criminal George Floyd during an arrest in Minneapolis.

The second Trump Administration has also taken federal action to end support for the violent, anti-law enforcement group, demanding that U.S. embassies stop flying BLM flags. It has also ordered the missions to stop flying Pride flags.
