An Ecuadorian national now faces federal charges for allegedly attempting to transport a group of illegal aliens through Vermont.

On Tuesday, the the U.S. Attorneyโ€™s Office for the District of Vermont announced that 34-year-old Manuel Rolando Meza-Cambo was charged by criminal complaint with transporting illegal aliens.

Federal prosecutors allege that in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, Meza-Cambo attempted to pick up four illegal aliens along Richford Road in Richford, Vermont.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent spotted Meza-Cambo’s minivan before he could pick up the aliens and followed the vehicle until it stopped in the middle of the road, at which point agents found two Mexican citizens and two Venezuelan citizens near the side of the road, prosecutors allege.

The four alleged illegal aliens are being prosecuted separately for illegal entry into the U.S.

Transporting unauthorized aliens is a crime under federal law if it occurs inside the U.S. by any means of transportation while knowing the alien has entered the country illegally.

Meza-Cambo faces up to five years of imprisonment if convicted.
