Maine Media’s Homeless Poster Child Caught up in Fentanyl Ring Arrested Again for Criminal Trespass

The Portland homeless man who became a media darling and was featured in well over a dozen articles in Maine newspapers prior to his arrest in February as part of a drug trafficking raid on his downtown apartment was arrested again this past weekend.

Bruce Cavallaro, 46, an “unhoused” man, was arrested on Saturday, April 26, by Portland Police at 20 Portland St. for criminal trespass and for violating a condition of his release, arrest records show.

His status as “unhoused” currently remains in some question. At the time of his February arrest, Cavallaro occupied an apartment in Portland, though his landlord was then seeking to evict him.

20 Portland St. is the address of “The Learning Collaborative,” a free healthcare clinic for the homeless run by the nonprofit organization Preble Street and MaineHealth.

Cavallaro was arrested in February after the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA) executed a high-risk search warrant at his Congress Street apartment.

Authorities said that they had been investigating potential drug trafficking, threats with firearms and harassment of the building’s other residents by the individuals living in or frequenting Cavallaro’s apartment.

During a search of the apartment, the MDEA discovered unspecified quantities of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and crack cocaine, and arrested seven people, including Cavallaro.

The MDEA raid on the apartment came after the building’s landlord filed for and received a writ of possession to allow law enforcement to forcibly evict Cavallaro.

Cavallaro initially refused to leave when evicted and was subsequently served with the writ of possession on February 7. He was warned that he had 48 hours to leave.

After Cavallaro and his accomplices still refused to leave, law enforcement intervened and executed the search warrant on February 11.

When the sprawling homeless encampments in Portland were at their peak in 2023 and 2024, Cavallaro was featured in well over a dozen articles — and sat for numerous photo shoots — in several of Maine’s largest newspapers, as something as a spokesperson for the “unhoused” against the city’s policy of sweeping the camps.
