The Maine State Police are investigating the death of a four-year-old child who was found in a Lewiston apartment with a gunshot wound to the head on Saturday.

According to the Maine State Police, shortly before 5 a.m. on Saturday, Lewiston Police responded to a 911 call for a four-year-old with a gunshot wound to the head at 93 Pierce St. apartment number two.

The Lewiston Police Department, Lewiston Fire Department, and United Ambulance Service responded to the scene.

The four-year-old was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where the child was pronounced dead at 7:08 a.m.

The child was then transported to the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office for an austopsy.

Maine State Police say that the Lewiston Police Department requested the State Police Major Crimes Unit South respond to assist with the investigation.

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services was notified, per protocol, when there is a death of a child in a household, State Police said.

Police say the cause and manner of the child’s death are still under investigation, and that more details will be released as they become available.

The Lewiston Sun Journal has reported that a friend of the family said the four-year-old boy accessed a gun inside the household and accidentally shot himself, although this has not been confirmed by police.
