A homeless man who had eight outstanding warrants for his arrest was taken into custody on Monday after allegedly assaulting a Portland Police officer.

Portland Police say that they were patrolling the area of the Shaw’s supermarket on Washington Avenue at about 12:18 p.m. on Monday when they recognized an individual who had a number of warrants out for his arrest.

According to police, when officers attempted to take the subject into custody, the man began resisting and struck one officer in the head, causing a laceration.

The suspect allegedly continued to resist, significantly scratching the neck of the same officer, who was treated for his injuries.

Police were eventually able to take the subject, 33-year-old Nicholas Lavoie — who police described as “unhoused” — into custody.

Lavoie was charged with assault on a police officer and refusing to submit to arrest and was taken to Cumberland County Jail.
