Kenneth Marin, 61, of Jay, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Friday following a February conviction for repeatedly sexually assaulting a young girl, starting when she was just six years old and continuing until she was 12. The crimes occurred in Augusta, court records show.

Superior Justice Daniel Mitchell issued the 25-year sentence, with no time suspended, making it likely that Marin will actually spend the next 25 years in prison. There is a good chance that Marin will die in prison, as he will be 86 when his sentence ends.

Justice Mitchell found that Marin has shown no remorse and taken no responsibility for his actions and warned that early release, either through a suspended sentence or probation, could lead to another offense.

Marin’s crimes took place at his Augusta home between 2012 and 2018, when he was a trusted family friend of the victim and was charged with her care on multiple occasions.

He was convicted on three counts of gross sexual assault, two counts each of unlawful sexual contact and unlawful sexual touching, and one count of tampering with a witness.

Marin allegedly tried to use his grandson, a friend of the victim, to help him conceal his crimes and told him what to say to the authorities.

Prosecutor Shannon Flaherty said that Marin committed hundreds of sexual assaults against the victim over a six-year period.

Marin has maintained his innocence throughout the court proceedings and even after his conviction. He claimed that he could not have committed the assaults because he suffers from prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction, but he failed to provide any evidence of these claims during his trial.
