The Portland Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a man who allegedly lunged out of his car at a 15-year-old girl who was walking home on Wednesday.

Police say they responded to the area of Warwick Street for a report of a suspicious male.

According to police, a 15-year-old female was walking home when a male subject stopped his vehicle and lunged at her.

The girl was able to elude the man and get back to her home safely.

The man was described as a white, balding, 60-70 years old and driving a 2009-2010 gold Toyota Corolla, or a similar vehicle.

Police say the vehicle may have been travelling in the area of Warwick Street and Candlewyck Road between 12 and 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

The department also is asking people who live in the area and have any surveillance equipment that may have recorded traffic passing by to contact Portland Police Detective Napijalo at 207-874-8906.

Is it time to arm or teen-aged female children? The world is becoming scarier for them more every year and I for one do not want my daughter to become one more victim.

Here in Bangor I rarely see children outdoors. Often the only hint that a child lives in a home is at HS graduation time when the yard signs come out; otherwise kids live like specters. We spend a month every year in Mexico, touring around on our own. There we see children outdoors even at night. Some of the states we visit in Mexico have travel advisories due to crime – even in those states children are outside being children. Mexicans love their kids just as much as Americans love our kids. Strangers abducting children in the US is thankfully not very common; most children in the US are taken by a biological mother or father – hardly a threat anywhere near comparable to a stranger abduction.
Raising cloistered children as most parents do now deprives children of social growth, problem solving, and gaining independence. We can see the outcome of cloistered childhoods in today’s youth. Not sure what the solution is.
