Three juvenile suspects are facing felony charges after allegedly participating in an armed robbery at an apartment building in Auburn that led to a 10-hour standoff with police.

According to Auburn Police, officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at 133 Lake St. in Auburn at about 4:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 4.

The alleged victim, a 17-year-old male, told police that he had been robbed of his clothing, shoes, and other personal belongings by individuals brandishing and threatening him with a firearm and a knife. The victim said that he fled the apartment while the suspects pursued him on foot with the weapons.

Upon arrival at the 133 Lake St. apartment building, police located the suspects inside of a second-floor apartment at the same address.

Police say the suspects initially refused to comply with officers who had surrounded the building. Auburn Police then requested assistance from the Maine State Police Tactical Team and mutual aid from surrounding law enforcement agencies given that the suspects were reportedly armed and had threatened violence.

According to police, nine individuals, ranging in age from 13 to 21 years, exited the building after several hours without incident.

However, one 17-year-old male suspect—the suspect alleged to have brandished the firearm—remained barricaded inside the apartment and refused to cooperate with law enforcement.

Auburn Police detectives secured a search warrant for the apartment, after which the Maine State Police Tactical Team attempted to enter the apartment.

While police attempted to enter the apartment, the 17-year-old suspect jumped from a second-story window and was quickly apprehended, police said. In total, the police standoff was nearly 10 hours.

Police say that so far, three juveniles have been charged with various offenses, including:

  • Robbery (Class A)
  • Theft (Class B)
  • Criminal Threatening with a Dangerous Weapon (Class C)
  • Assault (Class D)
  • Creating a Police Stand Off (Class E)

According to police, one of the juvenile suspects charged is a 15-year-old male known to law enforcement. The other two are 17-year-old males, one already on juvenile probation and the other who was under house arrest.

All three suspects were transported to Long Creek Youth Development Center.

The remaining individuals from the apartment were questioned and released without charges at this time, police said, adding that additional charges may be considered as their investigation continues.
