Portland Police last week apprehended a fugitive wanted by federal law enforcement after officers chased him down and found him in possession of crack cocaine and other illegal drugs.
Police say their crime reduction unit was working in the area of Portland Street and Forest Avenue shortly after 7 p.m. on Thursday when they observed a male subject remove what appeared to be a small baggie of drugs from his pants.
When police attempted to question the man, he fled, leading to a foot chase during which the subject allegedly thew the plastic baggie on the ground.
Two officers received minor injuries during the chase and apprehension of the subject.
One officer was treated at Mercy Hospital and has since been released and returned to work.
The male subject, identified by police as 36-year-old Jaulil Williams, was arrested and charged with being a fugitive of justice from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Williams also faces state charges for unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, failure to provide his correct name and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.
He was taken to the Cumberland County Jail and is still in custody under a federal hold.
Police say was Jaulil was in possession of 17.1 grams of cocaine base, 11.5 grams of crack cocaine, six Oxycodone pills and $2,990 in cash at the time of his arrest.
