Kennebec County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a 20-year-old woman in Benton after she allegedly shot a 19-year-old man in the neck following what police called a days-long alcohol and cocaine bender.

Deputies responded to 246 Unity Road in Benton at around 3:03 a.m. on Friday after receiving reports of a 19-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound, with the alleged shooter still on scene.

Deputy Chad Webster arrived with a Fairfield police officer and arrested the 20-year-old Hailie A. Hotham, who lived at the residence where the alleged shooting took place.

Law enforcement secured the pistol used in the reported crime. The victim, Izeck Spaulding, also of Benton, was transported by ambulance and helicopter to the Maine Medical Center in Portland where he is being treated for a gunshot wound to the neck.

At the time of the police statement, issued at around 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Spaulding was actively undergoing surgery and the Sheriff’s Department did not speculate on whether he will survive the wound.

Both Hotham and Spaulding were allegedly involved in a days-long alcohol and cocaine fueled bender, which may have contributed to the reported crime.

Investigation revealed that, in the early morning, Hotham and Spaulding began trading insults and arguing. A male friend who witnessed the alleged shooting had reportedly convinced Spaulding to leave the residence, which is when Hotham allegedly opened fire on him with a Glock handgun.

She and the witness allegedly both attempted to aid Spaulding before emergency services arrived.

The Sheriff’s Department did not clarify the relationship between Spaulding and Hotham.

Hotham was transported to the Kennebec County Jail where she currently faces charges for domestic violence elevated aggravated assault, domestic violence aggravated assault, and domestic assault.

She is being held without bail.
