Geek Team Founder Bill Clarke Announces Run for U.S. Senate as a Republican

Bill Clarke who has previously run for office in Maine with the U.S. Taxpayers’ Party, is now seeking to challenge U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) for the Republican nomination, he said in a press release late last week.

Clarke is framing his campaign as a return to what he describes as the founding principles of the nation. In materials posted online, Clarke lays out a vision centered on limited government, constitutional literalism, and a moral foundation rooted in faith.

“In June (when the primary is held), Lord willing, Maine Republicans will no longer be faced with choosing among the lesser of two evils. It will be time to define what it means to be a Republican,” he said.

Clarke’s biography notes he and his wife, Ruth, raised five children in Greene, Maine, and now have 14 grandchildren.

He has had entrepreneurial experience in the tech sector, having founded and sold a web application development firm known as The Geek Team. After that venture, he worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston training staff on software systems. More recently, Clarke launched a new venture, The Venture Group, to pursue business ideas.

Clarke’s political ambitions date back to 1996, when he ran for U.S. Senate in Maine with the goal of launching the U.S. Taxpayers Party in the state.

In his “Where Bill Stands” platform, Clarke frames three institutions—church, state, and family, as the divinely ordained pillars of Western civilization.

He argues that the modern U.S. government has diverged from constitutional limits and advocates for a rollback of federal authority to its original bounds.

On the economy, Clarke attributes high inflation to the excessive printing of money and argues for restoring control of the money supply to Congress. He supports returning to a gold standard and dismantling the Federal Reserve.

His platform calls for fewer regulations on energy, increased domestic production, and development of nuclear power, aiming to lower energy and gas prices. He supports invoking the National Guard in cities to fight crime and takes a strict legal approach to immigration, emphasizing enforcement of existing laws.

When it comes to defense and foreign policy, Clarke endorses a strong military posture and warns against entangling alliances, citing George Washington’s advice. He references doctrines from the Cold War era such as mutually assured destruction (MAD).

Like President Donald Trump, Clarke proposes eliminating income tax and funding government via tariffs. He also suggests selling federally owned lands back to states and employing an “apportionment tax” structure for deficits.

On other key issues, Clarke holds that human life begins at conception and supports making abortion a federal crime, particularly in states that have not enacted restrictions. He calls for privatizing Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security gradually while safeguarding benefits, placing them under a separate protected fund.

As the campaign develops, Clarke faces a crowded political landscape and the challenge of making his constitutionalist message resonate in Maine, a state known for its independent-leaning electorate. The race for the seat currently held by Sen. Susan Collins is expected to draw national attention, with Graham Platner and Governor Janet Mills running a high-profile contest for the Democratic nomination, together with an array of lesser-known candidates.
