The Houlton Police Department arrested a man on Monday after he allegedly stole cartons of cigarettes from a local smoke shop and attempted to flee on a bicycle.

At around 6:34 p.m., Houlton officers Austin White and Joshua Robbins responded to the Maine Smoke Shop at 139 North Road after reports of a theft of cigarettes.

Officers arrived, and the clerk at the smoke shop reported that a man entered the store wearing a black hoodie and a black surgical mask, took four cartons of cigarettes, and left without paying, fleeing on a bicycle.

The clerk was able to chase down the alleged thief and recover the cigarettes, but the suspect escaped. The clerk was also able to provide security footage to officers as evidence.

Officers located the suspect at the Nickel-Back Redemption store on 83 North Street, identified him as Ezra Brady, 34, of Houlton, and took him into custody.

He was transported to the Aroostook County Jail, where he faces charges of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and a probation hold, and he was issued a $1,000 bail for the theft charge.

Brady has a long history of arrests on a variety of charges, including drug charges.
