The Maine State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office is investigating a fire that broke out Monday evening at a home on Andrew Ham Road killing one elderly man, authorities said.

Fire investigators responded to 133 Andrew Ham Road at about 5:10 p.m. on December 1 at the request of the Cambridge Fire Department, which had been battling the blaze together with neighboring departments.

During early fire-suppression efforts, crews found a deceased person inside the home, officials said.

The victim is believed to be the homeowner, 75-year-old Stuart Howe. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta will conduct an autopsy to confirm the victimโ€™s identity.

Crews from Cambridge, Sangerville, and Harmony responded to the blaze, working in freezing temperatures and slippery conditions as they fought the fire. An excavator was brought in to help crews suppress hot spots, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
