Lewiston Mayor Asks for Resignation After Councilor-Elect Osman Indicted, Residency Under Fire

The political firestorm surrounding councilor-elect Iman Osman exploded this week after he was federally indicted on charges of receiving stolen firearms, an escalation that prompted Mayor Carl Sheline to break with tradition and publicly call for his resignation.

Osman, who won the Ward 5 seat on Nov. 4, faces serious gun-theft charges that threaten not just his political future, but also the legitimacy of his recent election. The indictment was filed Wednesday.

Compounding the legal jeopardy are longstanding questions about Osmanโ€™s official address: the condemned building at 210 Blake Street. The structure was ordered condemned by the city in October 2024 following a drug raid, and local critics contend it cannot legally serve as a residence.

In an unusually sharp rebuke for the calculating mayor, Sheline urged Osman to step down, arguing the combination of criminal charges and residency questions represent a โ€œdistraction from the essential business of governing.โ€ย

โ€œWhile he is entitled to the presumption of innocence, the judicial process will be lengthy and this matter has become an unwelcome distraction from the essential business of governing,โ€ Sheline said. โ€œStepping down would be the right thing to do.โ€

As of now, city officials have not publicly addressed the school-committee position Osman also holds, which relies on the same contested address. The silence has added to public frustration and raised questions about transparency and accountability at City Hall.

The convergence of the criminal indictment, the unresolved residency issue, and official silence has left many Lewiston residents wondering whether the Ward 5 vote ย and Osmanโ€™s election, should be considered valid at all.
