The Maine State Police have confirmed a murder-suicide following the discovery of two deceased adults at a Tremont residence earlier this week.

According to authorities, Southwest Harbor police responded to a 911 call at approximately 8:57 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, reporting an incident near 11 Big Rocks Road. Officers arriving at the scene found two adults deceased.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North took over the investigation in coordination with Southwest Harbor police. The Maine State Police Evidence Response Team was dispatched to process the scene and collect evidence.

Investigators identified the deceased as 78-year-old Jyoti Hawley and 75-year-old William Hawley, both residents of Tremont. Authorities said the two were husband and wife.

The bodies were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where autopsies were performed on Friday, December 26, 2025. The medical examiner determined that both deaths were caused by gunshot wounds. Jyoti Hawley’s death was ruled a homicide, while William Hawley’s death was ruled a suicide.

State police said all involved parties have been identified and emphasized that investigators believe the incident was isolated, with no ongoing threat to the public.

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North at 207-973-3700, extension 9, and request to speak with Detective Dana Austin. Tips may also be submitted through the Major Crimes Unit North online tip portal.  https://www.maine.gov/dps/msp/about/report-crime/major-crimes-unit-north
